Reactions to Excellence

It is because, among us, our first reaction to excellence tends not to be respectful admiration, but instead that least worthy and most destructive of emotions: petty jealousy)

Reactions to Excellence

If I were a plumber
And I got to see
The most amazing coupling
Anywhere there ever be,

If I were a drover
Singing behind the herd
And I found the sweetest sound
That I had ever heard,

If I were a philosopher
Brought unto a theory
Of logical progression
And stunning clarity,

If I were a teacher
To excellence aspire
And got to witness
The greatest teachers inspire,

I’d welcome them with ecstasy
That in life I’d been honored thus —
And that is the very great
Difference between us
