What Passes for Respect

That which passes for respect
Presently among us
Too often actually has
Another name:

Fear.

As in:

You have more money than I do.
You’re stronger than I am.
You have more pull than I do:
Unless I treat you right,

You
Might
Hurt
Me.

‘Kay.

That’s not respect.

Respect
Sounds like this:

I find qualities in you
To admire.
Your contribution to the world
Is valuable.
I’m so glad
You exist,
Even gladder
You’re nearby!

How
May I
Help you
Today?
